As per the story, the newlywed wife of the 16-year old King Hima drove away from the God of Death, Yamaraj, by blinding him with heaps of gold and silver. The king’s wife saved his life by blocking the sleeping chamber with a heap of wealth. Much like King Hima’s wife displayed an array of gold with lamps to ‘blind’ Yama, it is believed that a symbolic buying of gold and silver coins, jewellery and utensils will act as auspicious against ill and bringing good luck to every member of the family.
